The Role
The Mathematical Modeller will work individually and as part of a team to develop and test models and software tools that provide evidence-based decision-support to the Department of Defence. Typical tasks include:

  • Conceptual development and problem scoping to inform model design;
  • Data sourcing and elicitation activities for model population;
  • Model construction and verification using a variety of software packages and bespoke code (training and learning opportunities will be provided);
  • Model validation and data validation;
  • Analysis and interpretation of model results;
  • Report writing and presenting results to multiple audience types;
  • Theory development of model building and analysis techniques, and publishing of results in internal reports and the wider literature;
  • Collaboration with Defence stakeholders and academic partners.

About our Team
We are a small team that develop mathematical models which primarily focus for concept development, and provide evidence-based decision-support to the Department. The team’s primary responsibility is supporting force design by applying mathematical modelling to explore concepts and generate evidence to support decisions on force options and concepts of operation. The team is also engaged in future focused strategic research, including:

  • Mathematical modelling devoted to the exploration of future operating concepts, and support to quantitative wargaming within the Modelling Complex Warfighting project;
  • Support to the Agile Command and Control STaR Shot which considers the implications of information flow and processing in socio-technical systems
