The UTS Research and Innovation Office is recruiting for a Research Development Associate to partner with our high quality researchers and their collaborators to develop high quality research grant, fellowship and centre proposals, and to contribute to the development of a culture of research excellence at UTS.

The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) is responsible for supporting the growth of university research. The Research and Innovation Office has four functional areas - Research Operations and Management, Research Engagement, Strategic Grants Development and Research Intelligence and Quality.

The Research Development Associate will work in the Strategic Grants Development Team and will report to the Research Development Strategist (RDS).  The Strategic Grants Development Team supports the development of strategies for improving UTS’ success in gaining funding from ARC and NHMRC funding schemes as well as other externally competitive research centre schemes.

This new appointment is seen as a development position leading to becoming a Research Development Strategist, which is a senior leadership role within RIO. As such, relevant development and training will be provided to the successful applicant.

The main duties/responsibilities of the Research Development Associate will be:

  • Identify and develop of research funding strategies and initiatives for major funding opportunities and prestigious grant schemes.
     
  • Provide expert advice to researchers on strategies and grant writing to produce high quality research proposals.
  • Support unsuccessful applicants with constructive feedback and strategies to improve their next submission.

  • Develop close working relationships with potentially successful applicants, research leaders across the University and colleagues in RIO to improve our grant application success.

  • Review and edit draft applications and provide strategic and valued feedback that influences researchers to make improvements to their proposals and projects at all stages of the grant application process.

  • Working with the Research Development Strategist, contribute to strategic advice to the University on grant outcomes and improvement strategies and manage internal funds (approximately $2 million) to ensure future success.

At Level 9, the Research Development Associate will take responsibility for discrete funding schemes and operate with full independence around major schemes.  To be considered for a level 9 appointment, the successful applicant will have to demonstrate a track record of performing at this level.

Main skills/experience required:

  • Understanding of the Australian Competitive Research Grant environment.
  • Experience in developing major policy objectives and strategic plans in relation to research and funding activities.

  • Experience in the development and success of major research grant applications and/or successful business case development.

  • Demonstrated expertise in building highly effective working relationships with research active academics and with other external and internal stakeholders.

  • University higher degree and/or relevant extensive experience.

Remuneration/Salary  

Base Salary Range: $96,403 to $117,825 pa (HEW 8/9)

This role attracts 17% superannuation in addition to the base salary. Employee benefits include flexible work practices, child care centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
