The S&T4 Cyber Security Data Scientist and Researcher will work within the Automated Analytics & Decision Support Group (AADS), in the Systemic Protection & Effects Branch (SPE) of Cyber & Electronic Warfare Division (CEWD). Under limited direction of senior staff, the Cyber System Data Scientist will perform research and development in Machine Learning techniques for mission analytics of cyber-physical systems, automated mission modelling and mapping, and cyber threat characterisation. The Cyber Security Data Scientist will also support the development of tools and techniques for performing automated vulnerability analysis (automated cyber red teaming) to underpin future ADF capabilities in support of Defensive Cyber Operations Teams (DCOT) and Cyber Protection Teams (CPT). More broadly, you will contribute to the development of new techniques and software based technologies applicable to military cyber operations, enterprise cyber systems and critical infrastructure protection.

Under limited professional direction, the Cyber Security Data Scientist will be required to:

  • Undertake research and development activities, building deep technical expertise in the application of machine learning techniques for automated vulnerability analysis, cyber threat intelligence and threat characterisation, automated mission modelling and mapping, and mission analytics of cyber-physical systems;
  • As part of a science team, investigate and contribute to the development of new concept demonstrators and software technology elements applicable to AADS;
  • Work closely with military and operational personnel to advance the understanding and application of AADS technology within the Australian Defence Force (ADF); and
  • Prepare to scientific publication standard, papers discussing the work undertaken.

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a high quality Honours/Masters degree with relevant work experience, or a PhD in Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science or similar with emphasis on data sciences and machine learning;
  • Have proven software development experience, which demonstrates sound practical software engineering and programming skills in one or more languages; and
  • Have a solid understanding of and practical experience within the data sciences or mathematics domains.

    To perform their duties, the Cyber Security Data Scientist will be required to engage with clients and stakeholders, including undertaking travel to Defence facilities, military bases and military platforms. Appropriate WH&S training, equipment and induction will be provided as required.

    The Cyber Security Data Scientist will be required to undergo a security process to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Positive Vetting clearance.
