As the Research Technician – Advanced Cell Culture at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), you will be an integral member of the Tissue Culture and Media Production Unit, undertaking specialised cell culture and quality control duties.  You will differentiate Stem Cell cultures (ESC and iPSC) into Neural, Cardiomyocyte and Pulmonary tissue models, adhering to quality standards in the provision of cell lines for use in ISO17025 certified laboratories.  Through the use of Incucyte live-cell analysis, confocal microscopy and molecular techniques, you will confirm cell differentiation status and monitor host-cell responses within infectious disease experimental models.

Applicants must be able to meet ACDP microbiological security and security assessment requirements.

In this role you will:

  • Maintain a reliable production pipeline for the delivery of several stem cell derived tissue models for infectious disease research.
  • Maintain high-value stocks of stem and tissue-derived cells.
  • Ensure appropriate stocks of stem cell and cell-host differentiation reagents are maintained. 
  • Perform assays to monitor cell differentiation and responses to viral infection and/or drug treatments.
  • Complete laboratory analyses whilst also working on a number of parallel and competing tasks. 
  • Maintain clear communication regarding mutual expectations and monitor client satisfaction.
  • Oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on cell culture techniques and protocols.

Location:      Geelong – Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), Victoria
Salary:          AU$66k - AU$84k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in biotechnology.
  • Experience working under a laboratory quality system.
  • Experience in the propagation and differentiation of stem cells into multiple lineages.
  • Technical ability to perform immunofluorescent confocal microscopy, live cell analysis, immunoblotting and biochemical assays.
  • A current Class ‘C’ driver’s licence (or equivalent).

Eligibility

To be eligible to work in CSIRO you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or either hold, or be able to obtain, a valid working visa.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.
