CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science (CASS) operates Australia’s premier radio astronomy national facilities at Parkes and Narrabri in NSW and the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope, located on the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO), ~300km northeast of Geraldton in Western Australia.  

As the Observatory Support Officer, you will be based at the Murchison Support Facility (MSF) in Geraldton and provide administrative and management services for both the MSF and the ASKAP telescope operations at the MRO.  You are a self-motivated, dynamic individual and will be proactive in your approach to a diverse and continually evolving set of responsibilities.  In relation to the ASKAP observatory operations and services, you will be the primary point of contact for site visitors and will ensure site facilities and services are well maintained by the relevant service providers. In addition, you will manage all logistics relating to travel and accommodation for staff and visitors to site.

In this role you will:

Provide office management and administrative support to the ASKAP and broader CASS teams.

  • Undertake reception duties, meeting coordination and minutes, invoicing and reporting, procurement, accounts payable and receivable, and general office responsibilities.
  • Maintain staff schedules, coordinate regular travel and accommodation arrangements and liaise closely with the logistics service provider.
  • Ensure ASKAP site visitor facilities and services are maintained to the required standard.
  • Deliver precedent-based policy and procedure interpretation and advice, exercising initiative and creativity to solve routine problems.
  • Instruct others on administrative activities, as required.

Salary: AU$63k - AU$80k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold certification and/or have equivalent work experience in Office Administration.  You will also have:

  • Experience planning, coordinating and executing administrative tasks in a large and complex organisation.
  • Advanced level abilities using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Initiative and adaptability when prioritising competing demands and the required judgement to escalate issues if necessary.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to establish strong interpersonal relationships.
