Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship - Biosecurity Technician

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Program is an initiative of the CSIRO Indigenous Engagement Strategy which seeks to significantly increase Indigenous employment nationally within CSIRO. Through this strategy, CSIRO aims to enhance the educational, employment, training and career development opportunities for people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

An opportunity exists for a trainee to join CSIRO Agriculture and Food (A&F) to undertake a workplace-based traineeship. In this role you will provide technical assistance to the A&F Biosecurity team who undertake Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) biosecurity (quarantine) related services on behalf of CSIRO A&F research staff.  As part of this service, the Biosecurity team manage eleven DAWR-approved glasshouses for the post-entry quarantine growth of a range of agricultural species including wheat, barley, rice, cotton, sorghum and soybean. A major part of your role will be to assist the Biosecurity Glasshouse Manager with the care of these plants and general maintenance of the facilities.

Over the course of the traineeship, the successful applicant will undertake on-the-job training and complete a Nationally Accredited Qualification relative to their position. The course fees for this qualification will be paid for by CSIRO. Upon successful completion of the training package the trainee will be considered for further employment with CSIRO subject to the availability of a position.

Your duties will include

  • Assisting with general biosecurity glasshouse duties including hand watering, installing/monitoring automatic irrigation systems, glasshouse hygiene, planting, staking, harvest, inspections (pest/disease/structural) and record keeping.
  • Assisting with general biosecurity laboratory duties including seed germination, seed cleaning/packaging/labelling, laboratory hygiene and record keeping.
  • Adhering to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

 

Location: Black Mountain, ACT

Salary: AU$23,459 to AU$26,001 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Duration: Specified term of approximately 12 months depending on course of study
