About the opportunity 

We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for a dynamic Project Officer to join the team at Pre-clinical Pipeline for Cancer Therapeutics (PACT) based at the Kolling Institute for Medical Research situated in St Leonards.

Under the PACT Director/Laboratory Research Director you will be responsible for providing project management and technical expertise for the establishment, implementation and operation of a collaborative Pre-clinical Pipeline for Cancer Therapeutics (PACT) for brain cancer research.

You will also be responsible for

1. documentation of methods and procedures, service descriptions, templates and costings.
2. establishing and coordinating the tasks and activities in order to meet established milestones and deliverables and ensure effective collaboration with the stakeholders.
3. Some of the tasks would include the design, costing, approvals, deliverables and timelines for pre-clinical experiments and activities include co-ordinating the undertaking of these experiments.

The position will establish a specialized and high-quality brain cancer pre-clinical pipeline for testing novel cancer therapeutics that can then be readily and collaboratively accessed by brain cancer researchers internally and externally. Existing pre-clinical infrastructure and modelling expertise will be utilised to establish a collaborative Pre-clinical pipeline for Advancing Cancer Therapeutics (PACT). PACT will include brain cancer models, treatments, design, approvals, testing and collection of required specimens for downstream analysis. This position will formalize and document all the procedures required to access and use the pipeline.  This position will implement PACT, supervise a Research Assistant to assist with PACT activities and the establishment and characterisation of additional research models and tools to showcase and expand the brain cancer PACT capabilities. While the focus and priority of this position is brain cancer, other cancer models may also be accommodated and utilized.   

You will also be responsible for a Research Assistant that directly reports into this position.

About you

• Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as medicine, cancer, laboratory medicine, molecular biology or PhD (awarded or submitted pending award)
• demonstrated experience and skills in laboratory research, small animal(rodent) handling, husbandry and experimentation
• demonstrated experience with the preparation and understanding of animal ethics and other related protocols, their approval and reporting
• excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office) for the preparation of documents, records, communications and presentations, coupled with a general understanding of the project life cycle, project documentation, project standards and methodologies
• excellent scientific communication skills including writing of manuscripts and funding applications and oral scientific presentations

The ideal candidate will have a keen eye to detail and will be highly organized. Planning and analysis skills together with the ability to work according to strict deadlines and manage various demands will be highly regarded.

This position is funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation, a charitable organisation based at Hunter Medical Research Institute that raises funds for brain cancer research. The position is newly created and be based in The Brain Cancer Group (TBCG) laboratory within the Bill Walsh Translational Cancer Research Laboratory at the Kolling Institute, Northern Clinical School.
