The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia.

The faculty is focused on the built environment and it uses the methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments. Our range of disciplines enables us to respond to the great and conflicting global challenges of our time – urbanisation and sustainability. The faculty was the first in the world to establish a Chair in Architectural Science. We also have one of Australia’s best university laboratory infrastructures for research and design in the built environment, including an Illumination Lab, Audio and Acoustics Labs, and the only IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) Lab in the Southern Hemisphere. We have a major and ongoing investment in the Design Modelling and Fabrication Lab, including Architectural Robotics.

We seek to appoint an Associate Professor of Urban Design with an outstanding record of research and teaching in urban design. We are particularly interested in hearing from research-driven academics with proven expertise and ability in the field of urban design, demonstrated through research and practice.

The role involves opportunities for research leadership within the Discipline of Urban and Regional Planning and Policy, and also within the faculty, and as the Program Director of Urban Design and Urbanism.

The role also involves teaching, HDR student supervision (both traditional and potentially design-based), and undertaking research that advances the field of urban design.

The appointee’s international ambitions for their own work will be matched by their ambition to consolidate the faculty’s reputation as an international centre for urban design that makes a significant contribution to the field and addresses real-world problems.

To be successful in the position, you will need:

  • a PhD in Urban Design, or related area
  • national / international acknowledgement of your leadership and innovation in the field, and your contribution to industry, the profession, government and the community
  • an outstanding research track record, including translation of research outcomes into high impact, international, peer-reviewed publications
  • demonstrated track record of attaining competitive grant funding and/or industry funding
  • evidence of your capacity to successfully conceptualise complex applications for research funding
  • evidence that your work is attracting high-quality PhD applicants from around the world, and, evidence of high-quality PhD supervision and timely completions
  • evidence of peer esteem within the broader research community (eg, through membership / editorship of high impact journal(s); membership of national/international consultative bodies; membership of specialist committees or advisory boards)
  • evidence of excellent teaching, and capacity to provide leadership in the development and operation of high quality educational programs
  • evidence of successful leadership contributions at a faculty or university level.
