The cost of BoM’s IT overhaul has raised eyebrows.

Andrew Johnson, the CEO and Director of the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), disclosed the cost of the bureau's IT overhaul to his staff, a figure approaching a billion dollars.

This admission came despite Johnson's previous refusals to disclose financial details to senators, citing cabinet secrecy.

During recent Senate estimates, Johnson remained tight-lipped in response to inquiries from South Australian Greens Senator Barbara Pocock, saying; “I wish I could tell you, but as a cabinet decision … I’m not at liberty to disclose those to you”.

This stance is in stark contrast to his comments at an Australia Day awards event in January 2023, where he openly discussed the project's significant financial scope.
