The University of Wollongong (UOW) has announced it may have to cut up to 300 staff.

Over 1,700 people tuned into a briefing by the Vice Chancellor, Paul Wellings, on YouTube this week, in which he laid out options to address the crisis.

The strategies involve different degrees of salary sacrifice, with job losses of between 150 and 200.

He said keeping salaries at current levels could see up to 300 positions axed.

“The consequences of each of those options still results in job losses, and we should be clear about that,” Professor Wellings said.

The University has reported a loss of $90 million since the start of the crisis, but is expecting significant and continued losses until at least 2022 as the number of international students declines.

Academics gathered at UOW campuses this week including Bega, Batemans Bay, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands to protest any job losses.

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) spokesperson Georgine Classen says staff members are fearful for their future.

“We already have a shameful number of people at the University of Wollongong in insecure work, we demand that these people be protected,” Ms Classen said.
