A new Torrens University campus has officially opened in Adelaide.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne was there for the launch.

“This is a great result for South Australia because Torrens University is an example of an innovative and globally focused university that is helping Australia maintain its place as one of the finest higher education destinations in the world,” Mr Pyne said.

“Last year we welcomed Torrens University, part of the Laureate International Universities network, as a positive addition to Australia’s Higher Education landscape."

Torrens is the state’s first new university in 20 years, and was opened by former US President Bill Clinton in his capacity as Honorary Chancellor of Laureate International Universities.

“Thanks to its three semester per year structure, its first students are already graduating,” Mr Pyne said.

“Torrens University also includes student mobility – where students study for a period offshore – as a feature of its programmes model.

Mr Pyne claimed the new uni was a signal of success for his own Government.

“Torrens’ international mobility focus aligns well with the Government’s aim to make studying in the Asia-Pacific region a rite of passage for Australian undergraduates.

“Through our New Colombo Plan we are deepening the relationship between Australia and its neighbours, and strengthening the understanding of Asia and the Pacific in Australia.”
