The US Space Force has paused the use of AI tools due to data security concerns.

The US Space Force has temporarily suspended the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, by its workforce.

In a recent memo seen by Reuters, Space Force has prohibited the use of these AI tools on government computers by any Guardians (its name for Space Force employees).

Guardians will now need formal approval granted by the Chief Technology and Innovation Office of the agency.

This decision comes in light of risks associated with data aggregation.

Generative AI, powered by expansive language models that learn from vast datasets, has seen a significant surge in application over the past year.

Products like OpenAI's ChatGPT exemplify this trend by rapidly generating text, images, or video content based on simple prompts.

Lisa Costa, the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of the Space Force, stated in the memo that this technology holds the potential to revolutionise the workforce and enhance the Guardians' operational efficiency.

The temporary ban was confirmed by an Air Force spokesperson and is described as a strategic pause aimed at determining the most secure path for integrating Generative AI and Large Language Models into the roles and mission of the US Space Force.

Costa further revealed that her office has formed a task force in collaboration with other Pentagon offices to explore responsible and strategic applications of generative AI.

More comprehensive guidelines on the Space Force's use of generative AI are expected to be released within the coming month.
