Tech giant Microsoft has posted a demonstration of its latest development – turning an entire room into a gaming surface not unlike the holodeck from Star Trek.

The ‘RoomAlive’ system uses six 3D depth cameras paired with projectors to place users inside games spread across their floors, walls and furniture.

It appears to be a fully immersive experience, and could be a hint of the future of living room-based adventuring.

The ceiling-mounted ‘procams’ (projectors mounted with cameras) constantly scan the room to create a 3D model of it, so that objects created inside the model can be projected back into the equivalent space in the real room.
