New research from the United States has hailed mangoes as a possible wonder-food.

One of Australia’s major fruit industries could get a boost from the medical community, with the US Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences linking mango consumption with an improved diet and nutritional intake for all walks of life.

Mangoes provide many of the body’s essential fuels, such as dietary fibre, potassium, certain nutrients and C-reactive proteins. Earlier research suggests they may have an effect in reducing cardiovascular disease risks.

The new research was funded by the US National Mango Board. Australian mangoes are one of the country’s most sought-after exports, selling well in Japanese and European markets.
