The Victorian Minister for Technology, Gordon Rich-Phillips has announced that the State Government will provide $3 million as part of a $21 million investment in the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES).

IBES Director, Laureate Professor Rod Tucker said the state government's continuing support for IBES will allow the Institute to build upon its successes of the past two years and continue to foster multi-disciplinary research in partnership with industry.

"The $21 million investment cements IBES at the forefront of broadband research in Australia and will drive greater innovation in the development of broadband applications to harness the potential of the National Broadband Network,” Professor Tucker said.

IBES was founded in July 2009, and its research program investigates broadband applications and end user experiences in health, education, communities, social infrastructure and businesses. The announcement of funding means that the next generation of research projects can be developed at IBES further extending how broadband is used to deliver outcomes for the benefit of society.
