The Federal Government has announced that applications for National Science Week 2013 are now open, with $500,000 being made available for grants between $2,000 to $25,000 to showcase a variety of scientific endeavours.

Federal Minister for Science and Research, Senator Chris Evans, said the grants will allow organisations and community groups to design and develop events for next year's National Science Week.

"National Science Week is a chance to learn more about the everyday impacts of science on our everyday lives and how they can be involved," Senator Evans said.

"About 1.4 million Australians attended more than 1000 events across the country during this year's National Science Week, and next year promises to be even bigger and better.

"Science is at the heart of ensuring a strong economy, developing a healthy environment and improving our quality of life and National Science Week plays a major part in delivering that."

Applications for National Science Week will be held from 10 to 18 August 2013. Applications close on 26 November 2012.
