The Role
APS 6 Data Analyst

This role will leverage your understanding of statistics, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and programming. You will work as part of a team to develop and implement new tools and methodologies that use AGO’s data and GIS more effectively and efficiently. You will work with a range of stakeholders, including AGO’s intelligence analysts, data scientists and capability managers, ensuring your analytics meet user requirements, are rigorous and consistent with AGO’s system environment.

APS 6 Data Scientist
This role will leverage your experience in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence (AI/ML), data analysis and automation, to assist AGO to derive deeper insights from larger volumes of data, and at a pace that enables decision advantage. You will liaise with a range of stakeholders to evaluate and implement AI/ML technologies that drive innovation and modernise AGO’s analytic practices.

The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. 

Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) makes a critical contribution to protect the lives and safety of Australians at home and overseas by providing accurate and timely geospatial-intelligence to support decision makers at all levels.

The Data Innovation and Analytics Directorate (DIAD) is a team of highly motivated data specialists who provide analytical support to AGO’s intelligence and production areas. Our vision is to transform analytic workflows, increasing automation and augmentation through the application of data science and machine analytics. We work closely with a range of stakeholders to understand their analytic requirements, and deliver new tools and methodologies that enable them to achieve more efficient and innovative outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will be highly motivated, have strong oral and communication skills, with broad knowledge of geospatial data applications and analytical techniques. In addition, they will be able to work both individually and as part of a team, build and maintain productive working relationships with diverse stakeholders, and proactively address skill/knowledge gaps. They will be resilient problem solvers, willing to engage with ambiguity and are able to harness collective knowledge to optimise outcomes. 

They will also possess some of the following:

  • Strong data analysis/science skills, including the ability to use, manage, manipulate and analyse data to produce evidence-based conclusions.
  • Intermediate to advanced python programming experience.
  • Intermediate to advanced GIS experience.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts simply and clearly.
  • Experience developing/delivering data-centric training.
  • Knowledge of machine-learning techniques and data processing frameworks.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms, such as AWS and Kubernetes.
