Sydney Medical School (SMS) is dedicated to improving the health of people in Australia and elsewhere through high quality education, research and the provision of health care. The school has a large student body – 1200 medical students, more than 1300 postgraduate students, and nearly 1000 students undertaking higher research degrees. The Concord Clinical School is a teaching facility of the Sydney Medical School located at Concord Repatriation General Hospital and coordinates the clinical education of approximately 230 medical students.

The Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation (ADRF) is currently seeking to appoint a Director of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), located on the Concord Hospital campus, who has an outstanding international reputation and publication record relevant to asbestos-related diseases.

In this role, you will be a member of the University’s Concord Clinical School in an appropriate discipline and be responsible to:

  • the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation for administrative and research matters
  • the University for academic and research matters via the Concord Clinical School
  • Concord Hospital and Sydney Local Health District for clinical matters.

As Director of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute, you will provide strategic insights and organisational drive to further the domestic and international standing of research outcomes, professional achievements and business performance of the ADRI through the next phase of development. You will:

  • plan and direct the implementation of a research program that is recognised domestically and internationally for the contribution it makes to the control of asbestos-related diseases
  • develop and manage productive relationships locally, nationally, and globally with stakeholders, other organisations, and professional networks to advance the objectives of the ADRF and the capacity and effectiveness of the ADRI
  • promote, sponsor and facilitate asbestos-related and dust-related diseases education and training in relevant health disciplines
  • raise understanding, support and commitment among governments, donors, and the community as an effective and visible public spokesperson for the ADRI and for the task of controlling asbestos-related diseases.

Term

This appointment will be available on a full-time basis for an initial period of five years with possibility of renewal for a further five year period, subject to performance, need and funding.
