The Paediatric Surgery Clinical Research Provisional Fellow position at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) is available for the 2025 Clinical Year from 03 February 2025 to 01 February 2026. The position involves primarily a research role within the Department of Surgery in addition to portion of time being given to clinical work, leadership and education. The department hosts a number of Surgeons with diverse academic interests and strong research track records
This position is ideally suited for a candidate enrolled in a higher research degree with a long term career goal of becoming a surgeon. The position may be offered as a 0.5 FTE to allow a concurrent external higher degree research. This position provides an opportunity to develop skills in basic and clinical research with the opportunity to continue to keep a hand in clinical work. All clinical and research work is supervised and supported by consultants within the Department of Surgery with the Department head overseeing both the clinical and research activity. Appointments with the University of Sydney as an affiliate will be supported and encouraged.
The Clinical Research Fellow also works closely with many of the other clinical teams in inpatient and outpatient care both clinically and strategically. The education role includes educational activities within the Department of Surgery, CHW Clinical School as well as the hospital wide education program. Clinical responsibilities will involve activities appropriate to the Fellow's level of experience as determined by the Department head.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum 3 years postgraduate experience with at least 18 months previous surgical experience or equivalent
- Demonstrated advanced abilities and commitment in Paediatric Surgery.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
- Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.
- Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable.
- Emergency Management of Severe Trauma Course (EMST / ATLS or equivalent) and Emergency Management of Severe Burns
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. Please provide proof of booster vaccination if available. This is a Category A position per NSW Health Policy Directive: Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases.
