Senior Research Assistant/Gait Lab

 

A part-time or full-time opportunity exists for a motivated and energetic individual with qualifications relevant to and / or experience to take charge of running and maintaining the motion capture lab (Gait lab), including conducting data collection tasks as required to contribute to research conducted at the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute. The appointee will join a team of researchers at the Institute and contribute to the research program and overall profile of the Institute by the motion capture process, including data processing and quality assurance to identify clinical outcomes and new solutions to guide research innovation. The primary emphasis of this role lies in delivering proficient reports and conducting data analysis for clinical utilisation and biomechanical studies. This includes interpreting data for presentation and publication, all while ensuring the optimal operation and maintenance of the motion capture (mocap) system and the gait lab.

Key Responsibilities
Prepare and conduct motion capture of knee surgery patients using the SORI motion capture (“mocap”) system (Vicon)

  • Conduct data processing and analysis as required.
  • Assist in the compilation of study-specific protocols and system standard operating procedures
  • Ensure the mocap system operates within acceptable accuracy thresholds at all times
  • Ensure that the mocap system, including patient marker set is prepared for a capture session prior to the patient’s arrival to the laboratory
  • Interact with patients, staff, clinicians and students professionally at all times.
  • Provide pre and post op gait analyses reports to relevant surgeons. 
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures at all times and conduct alterations to procedures appropriately.
  • Complete patient recruitment and bookings within deadlines (routine gait and study specific)
  • Conduct pre-operative and post-operative motion capture for specific studies within deadlines and within budget
  • Provide results for studies or individual consultation in a timely manner, to the highest standard possible
  • Ensure desk space and laboratory is clean and presentable at all times
  • Remain available for patient motion capture sessions within pre-agreed days and times
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to refine data collection procedures and disseminate via written procedures and internal presentations.

Selection Criteria

  1. Candidates interested in both part-time and full-time positions are encouraged to apply.
  2. Possesses a minimum of a master’s degree or higher with a major in biomechanics and demonstrates experience with optical motion capture systems (Vicon preferred).
  3. Holds Australian Residency
  4. High-level knowledge of the motion capture process, including data processing and quality assurance
  5. Demonstrated capacity to operate Vicon hardware (Bonita cameras) and software (Nexus), as well as post-processing packages (Matlab and Visual3D)
  6. Ability to conduct assessments for projects as required. 
  7. Enthusiasm for motion capture and clinical biomechanics.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to independently conduct statistical analysis.
  9. Excellent computer proficiency using standard applications (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)
  10. Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse range of stakeholders (patients, clinicians, scientists)
  11. Must be able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude while providing exemplary customer service.
  12. Ability to work independently and use appropriate initiative to achieve designated task.
