The University of Melbourne has a vibrant defence and national security research engagement program with industry, US Defense agencies such as DARPA and Australia’s Defence Science and Technology. Several opportunities are opening up in the defence research field in the near and medium term and we are seeking expressions of interest from postdocs and research engineers.

We are seeking strong postdoctoral fellows and research engineers in the areas of:

  • Sonar signal processing - Skills in signal processing, modelling, simulation and algorithms. Ability to code in matlab is a requirement. Desirable are knowledge of sensor management,  dynamic programming, sonar or radar sensing. 
  • Antenna beam synthesis and optimisation - Skills in modelling, simulation, and algorithms. Ability to code in Matlab is a requirement. Desirable are knowledge of optimisation, electronics and electromagnetism, including modelling packages for the latter. 
  • Autonomous systems – networked control systems, path planning, coordinated control and/or distributed estimation would be required. Previous experience with implementation on hardware platforms would be highly regarded.
  • Communications for autonomous systems (spectrum management and control) - The candidate should have expertise in machine learning, especially distributed and adversarial learning, wireless communications, and distributed optimisation/game theory. Candidates with good programming skills will be highly regarded.

Your Background

PhD in mathematics, electrical engineering, mechatronics or a closely related discipline. and strong academic record will be highly regarded.

A successful record of engaging industry, government and/or the community in research. Previous experience in independent research in the areas of interest.

Communication skills to engage a variety of industry, research and government stakeholders.

You will be eligible for an Australian baseline security clearance and many of the projects may require Australian citizenship.
