Based at UQ St Lucia as part of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, the TC Beirne School of Law is the oldest and most prestigious law school in Queensland.

About This Opportunity 

The successful applicant will be a key player in a strong, productive and collaborative research partnership between The University of Queensland, The University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW Canberra) and the Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence Cooperative Research Centre (TAS-DCRC), focusing on the investigation of legal and ethical implications of using autonomous systems in the armed forces.

The work of the research fellow will concentrate on the application of export control, arms trade and sanctions regimes to the supply, export and brokering of trusted autonomous military systems, and associated technology and know-how. The work will cover relevant international and Australian law.

This project aims is to deliver value-sensitive input into systems design and policy development. The successful candidate will produce research papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences and other forums, and complete other research-related administrative duties.

Our ideal candidate will be well versed in administrative and international law, with either a PhD or significant legal practice and a track record of high-quality scholarly publications. We are looking for someone who can engage with stakeholders from a variety of disciplines, backgrounds and institutions, with a commitment to upholding the values of the University, School and research group.

Applicants must be eligible for a baseline security clearance from the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). In order to be eligible for an Australian Government security clearance, an individual must be an Australian citizen and have a checkable background as determined by AGSVA as part of the vetting assessment. Under exceptional circumstances, following a risk and suitability assessment, an eligibility waiver may be granted.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment (three years) at Academic Level B or C.

Level B – the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $99,542 – $118,207 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $116,465- $138,302.

Level C - the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $121,939 - $140,603 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $142,669 - $164,506.
