Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Fellow in Cosmology

School of Mathematics and Physics

The discipline of Physics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. The discipline is internationally recognised for its research excellence in quantum science and hosts a number of first class research centres.

The School of Mathematics and Physics leads the Australian Research Council (ARC)  Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Engineered Quantum Systems and hosts nodes of the ARC CoE for Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies and ARC CoE for Quantum Computing and Communication Technology.

Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school’s web site at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/.

About This Opportunity

The aim of Tamara Davis’ Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Fellowship is to bring together a team of researchers to study the properties of dark energy and the theories that might explain it.  The five years of funding enable us to bring together a team consisting of at least four postdoctoral fellows (of which these are two).

The Astrophysics Group at the University of Queensland is rapidly expanding, with two new astrophysicists recruited in the last year.  These positions will further enhance and expand upon our existing research strengths in theoretical cosmology, observational cosmology, and galaxy evolution.

We are seeking two outstanding cosmologists who will undertake research at the University of Queensland as part of Professor Tamara Davis’ ARC Laureate Fellowship.  High level research positions of up to five years duration are available.

We are looking for a broad range of talents to build a cohesive team focused on understanding dark energy and dark matter using next generation data sets. This includes but is not limited to, cosmological theory, dark energy phenomenology, large scale structure theory and observations, supernova cosmology, and/or gravitational waves.

Our group has active collaborations with DES, DESI, 4MOST, LSST, and ASKAP and access to the ESO optical telescopes and Australian observing and computing facilities.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

The candidate will ideally have experience in doing cosmology with large surveys (spectroscopic or photometric), or doing theoretical explorations relevant to these surveys.

The candidate will have access to the substantial resources of the ARC Laureate Fellowship, and would be invited to help drive the direction of the group, including selection and co-supervision of PhD students and honours students.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity (but no obligation) to participate in undergraduate teaching, and to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students.  Ample travel funding will be available.  There may also be the opportunity to split this position to be half a lectureship, half a postdoctoral fellowship.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to recruitment@uq.edu.au.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position at Academic level A or B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,878 - $113,728 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $99,307 - $133,061.

You will be able to take advantage of UQ Sport Facilities, salary sacrificing options, on-campus childcare, discounted private health insurance, development programs and many other benefits.
