The Role

We are after a dynamic and enthusiast team member with science and technology experience who’s keen to take up a role in policy, strategy and governance for Australia’s second-largest publicly funded research agency. This exciting role is central to setting the direction of science and technology for Defence and will be critical to shaping the direction of Defence’s innovation, science and technology enterprise.

In this role, you’ll be able to build on your broad awareness of Government and Defence needs and policy direction. You will use your understanding of Defence’s strategic context and be able to develop approaches for DSTG to respond to these challenges. You will develop and implement Defence science and technology policy and strategy which guides investment and delivery for DSTG along with the broader Defence S&T innovation ecosystem.

Through personal and team research, you’ll be able to ensure that world leading best practice shapes DSTG’s policy and strategy approach.

About our Team
You will be part of a diverse team central to DSTG who are actively engaged in a range of strategy setting initiatives driving more, together. The team works closely to lead and implement the strategic direction for the Chief Defence Scientist and is involved in ensuring DSTG research efforts are aligned with Defence’s strategic priorities and interests. You will also have a critical role as part of this team to articulate science and technology objectives and priorities across Defence in order to shape longer-term directions. In this team, you’ll engage broadly across Defence and with other Government departments to advocate for Defence science and technology ensuring it is well placed across government priorities and initiatives.

Our Ideal Candidate
As our ideal candidate you will be action orientated and passionate about achieving outcomes driving Defence science. You will understand the Defence strategic mission and be able to articulate how science and technology is central to achieving this mission.

You’ll have an ability to integrate diverse and disparate information to form strategy, policy and guidance for Defence science and technology. You’ll also be able to argue persuasively for the strategic importance of science and technology across a diverse group of stakeholders that may be technical specialists or generalists.

You will have a science background relevant to Defence which will give you a strong foundation to understand the research pressures and be able to balance these with the organisational needs and objectives
