Fishermans Bend - VIC

The Role
The Naval Platform Manoeuvring and Seakeeping Specialist will manage and conduct both experimental programs and numerical investigations using hydrodynamic, manoeuvring/seakeeping tools (incl. CFD, panel methods and/or coefficient based models) in support of hydrodynamics and research into maritime platforms and their propulsion systems.

You will also be responsible for interpreting, reporting, and presenting results from these studies. In this role you will engage with experimental hydrodynamic studies related to maritime vehicles in the planning, execution, post processing and reporting stages.

Duties include:

  • Manage/perform both experimental and numerical seakeeping/manoeuvring studies of fully appended maritime platforms.
  • Manage/contribute to collaborative research projects with Australian universities, industry, and international partners.

About our Team
DST Group's Maritime Division provides technologies and scientific and technical (S&T) expertise to deliver the capability edge to the warfighter and enhance the operational performance and survivability of defence platforms in the maritime domain.

The Acoustic Signature Management branch of Maritime Division provides Australia’s primary capability for the management and control of acoustic signatures of defence platforms and the hydrodynamic, propulsion, and manoeuvring performance of ships and submarines.

The Hydroacoustics group undertakes computational and experimental studies addressing hydrodynamic, manoeuvring, and hydroacoustics effects on maritime platform design and operation.

This includes the development and validation of experimental and computational fluid dynamic and hydrodynamic techniques to examine and evaluate new and innovative platform designs. The group also research on flow noise generated by the platform and on propellers and propulsor systems, including evaluating propulsor performance and through life management.

The group has access to a number of world class experimental facilities.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in hydrodynamics and maritime vehicles. This includes experience in numerical simulations (incl. CFD, panel methods and/or coefficient based models) and experimental programs related to hydrodynamic, manoeuvring and seakeeping behaviour. A background in engineering and/or naval architecture is desirable.

The candidate should be able to work under limited guidance and manage small teams. Previous experience conducting research related to maritime platform hydrodynamics and their manoeuvring/seakeeping behaviour is desirable. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to manage and conduct investigations into hydrodynamic problems and develop innovative and practical solutions.

The candidate should have strong communication skills, with experience in presentations, demonstrations, and written communication to peers, academia, and partners. The candidate will engage in internal and external teams to undertake collaborative science and technology projects to provide solutions to stakeholders.
