The Role
Under limited guidance, the Senior Researcher in dismounted Robotic and Autonomous System (RAS) will apply and develop innovative techniques and solutions towards the development of RAS and the integration with the dismounted combatants to improve their operational effectiveness and survivability. This includes the enhancement and innovative development and integration of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products and/or bespoke prototypes, including through simulation to deliver new technology capabilities. These tasks are of considerable complexity and require diverse experience to resolve. The successful candidate will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives.

They will have a strong background in mathematics and numerical techniques pertinent to the science of autonomy and artificial intelligence. They will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a small team to achieve desired outcomes.

About our Team
The position is based in the Integrated Soldier Technologies (IST) S&T Capability (STC) within Land Division (LD) in Melbourne. The IST STC provides Science & Technology support to Australian Defence personnel and to personnel from allied national security agencies and organisations. This support is designed to provide dismounted combatants with integrated protective measures, to enable freedom of action to undertake operations in all environments.

The IST STC applies evidence-based problem solving and undertakes enabling Research and Development (R&D) to provide solutions addressing the provision of functional protection for dismounted personnel. Areas of expertise include ballistics and blast mechanics, electromagnetic signature management development, assessment and modelling, textile treatments and properties, functional materials, robotic autonomous systems and augmented reality.

Our ideal candidate will possess relevant demonstrated skills in:

  • A demonstrable knowledge of the mathematics underpinning artificial intelligence and autonomy, and computational mathematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems in a fast paced, result oriented and highly adaptive work environment.
  • High-level demonstrable communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a cohesive team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within provided timeframes to deliver required results.
  • A willingness to participate in multidisciplinary research teams; the research may involve computer simulation, laboratory test and evaluation experiments, field trials and exercises with the ADF.
  • A willingness to work for the Department of Defence and its mission supporting the security of Australia and its interests.
