The Role
The Embedded Technologies Researcher/Technologist will be part of a team that conducts applied research into the vulnerability assessment and protection of embedded systems and technologies used in defence and military systems. You will be responsible for developing new knowledge and techniques for the analysis and assessment of commercial and prototype microelectronic and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies.

You will interact with defence scientists and engineers to assist with design concepts, determine relationship of materials properties and electrical performances and assess vulnerabilities in performance and security. You will be hands on and conduct experimentation into novel techniques that require an understanding of the fundamentals across a range of physical fields including optical and scanning electron microscopy, micro-electronics and nano-fabrication.

You will work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with R&D partners in academia, industry, and other international government research labs in order to progress the state-of-the-art.

This position will be filled as either S&T3-4 or S&T5 depending on the level of expertise and experience of the successful candidate.

About our Team
The Vulnerability Assessment and Protection (VAP) Group undertakes research and development in Scientific and Technical Intelligence (STI) technologies and techniques to understand current and future threats and protect Australian interests.

The Threat Assessment Techniques (TAT) Discipline focuses on developing techniques to assess hardware vulnerabilities of embedded technologies used in defence. TAT enables Defence to understand threats across multiple domains and provides S&T advice on the application of complex embedded technologies in military systems.

You will have the ability to work under limited direction as part of a diverse team of APS and contractor staff and manage resources to deliver results that are relevant and timely.

Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated:

  • Initiative, curiosity, scientific integrity and engineering pragmatism in your work, be able to think creatively and propose sound, applied research and engineering approaches to solving complex problems.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals and hands on experience in one or more of the following fields: Microscopy (optical, scanning electron, focused ion beam or photon emission), semiconductor materials science, micro-electronic engineering.
  • Knowledge, understanding or interest in one or more of the following: digital electronic design, CMOS design & fabrication, micro or nano-engineering, script development & image processing techniques.


Experience in the use and modification of scientific equipment to extend capabilities, prototype development, knowledge of semiconductor failure analysis tools and techniques, assured hardware design would be very highly regarded.

A willingness to apply for a TOP SECRET POSITIVE VETTING clearance.
