The Role
The Strategy, Systems and Synthesis (3S) Science and Technology Capability (STC) is seeking experienced multi-disciplinary researcher to fill the role of Research Scientist - Strategy & Policy Analysis within our Strategic Analysis Discipline. You will be a core member of our diverse team of scientists, researchers and analysts that builds scientific capability for the analysis of the external and internal strategic security and capability future contexts, supporting and enhancing high-level Defence strategic planning, Defence policy, strategy and future concepts development, and strategic resource allocation to Defence capabilities.

The Research Scientist - Strategy & Policy Analysis position reports to the Discipline Lead - Strategic Analysis. Working under broad direction, you will be contributing to high priority and time critical work packages to provide evidence-based advice to inform some of the most important strategic decision-making occurring in the Department of Defence though scientific research and analysis.

About our Team
The 3S STC is in the Joint and Operations Analysis Division (JOAD) in Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), and is part of in the Strategy and Joint Force (SJF) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within JOAD. Our scientific disciplines and specialties include: Strategic Analysis, Systems Science and Engineering, Judgement-Based Operations Analysis, Simulation, Experimentation and Wargaming, Strategic Risk Analysis and Joint Concepts Analysis.

The 3S STC works collaboratively with other STC from within JOAD and wider DSTG to provide a comprehensive capability of strategic-level analytical and design techniques that support strategic decision-making at the highest levels of Defence and certain aspects of Government. The principal stakeholders for the 3S STC are VCDF Executive, SP&I Group, ADF HQ and National Security Agencies. Our capability is enhanced through collaboration with universities and other research organisations, and partnership with industry and other government agencies domestically and internationally

  • Essential skills include demonstrable strong conceptual and systems thinking abilities to conduct scientific analysis and synthesis at high, strategic levels of abstraction, and ability to translate research findings into actionable recommendations to support Defence strategic decision-making;
  • You will have well-developed communication and influencing skills allowing you to engage and build strong rapport with diverse military and civilian stakeholders across Defence to inform client decision-making;
  • You will be able to harness intellectual contributions from a range of stakeholders and co-develop shared solutions within a strong multi-disciplinary research team environment;
  • Your novel solutions to complex strategic problems relevant to Defence will reflect your ability to generate world-class research excellence through peer-reviewed publications in scientific literature.
