Fishermans Bend – VIC

The Role

Naval Platform Survivability (NPS), within Maritime Division, is seeking a science discipline leader (DL AIREX) to lead the assessment and analysis of the vulnerability of maritime vessels against explosive blast and fragmentation effects from an above water weapon attack.

The DL AIREX role is responsible for leading the effort in developing numerical and experimental methods to analyse maritime structures and materials under air blast loading. The DL AIREX also provides design assurance advice to Defence on the Royal Australian Navy's current and future ships and submarines, and identifies opportunities for continuous innovation to enhance air blast survivability. By fostering their team; working closely with other related science areas and through inter/national collaborations, the DL AIREX ensures continuous evolutionary development for greater capability to support vulnerability design assurance.

The Team

Naval Platform Survivability (NPS) is part of the Maritime Division, within the Maritime Platform Performance (MPP) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC). The research in MPP covers naval architectures, power and energy systems, material design, platform vulnerability and recoverability. MSTC outcomes are focused on improving the operation and sustainment of the present and future Navy fleet.

NPS leads the research and development of advanced modelling and technologies to support ADF surface ships and submarines in the areas of material analysis and design; fire-fighting and atmosphere; platform vulnerability and recoverability to underwater and air water weapon effects. blasts.

NPS supports Defence in providing expert advice, design assurance activities and the transitioning of innovative methods and solutions to RAN to ensure the present and future fleet is available, operational and with a sustained presence. We achieve this by nurturing our talent and partnering with internationally recognised organisations to remain at the cutting edge of scientific developments in naval platform survivability.

Our Ideal Candidate

You are a subject matter expert in air blast physics (or related sciences) with the capability to lead the analysis and provide advice on the structural vulnerability and operational performance of current and future fleets to above water weapon effects.

You will have experience blast physics, including the development of both advanced material and structure modelling; and simulation tools and novel experimental methods to investigate and validate predictive models.

You have experience fostering and leading small interdisciplinary teams; connecting across organisational boundaries and with diverse stakeholders. You do this by clearly communicating complex technical results and their implications to academia, industry and Defence. You can deliver a capability edge to the Royal Australian Navy through your ability to collaborate with external partners, understand Defence requirements and contexts, lead targeted S&T work packages and respond to strategic drivers.
