The Department of Defence is seeking a dynamic and outstanding senior executive for Defence’s Chief Information Security Officer role who will also lead Defence’s Chief Information Officer Group (CIOG) Information Communications Technology Security Branch.

The Defence Chief Information Officer Group is responsible for ensuring that Defence has a dependable, secure and integrated Defence Single Information Environment to enable military operations and support Defence business.

As the Defence Chief Information Security Officer and Assistant Secretary Information Communications Technology (ICT) Security in CIOG, you will be responsible for:

  • Being the ICT security advisor for Defence and providing advice and guidance on significant cyber security risks that contribute to Defence’s overall security performance and agency level risk.
  • Providing strategic level guidance for Defence’s cyber security program.
  • Ensuring Defence’s compliance with whole of Government cyber security policy, standards, regulations and legislation.
  • Controlling, shaping and influencing ICT Security management systems and resources within CIOG and across Defence.
  • Providing strategic oversight of all ICT security-related activities within the Defence Single Information Environment and influence the broader ICT environment.

To be a strong candidate for this role, you will need to have extensive experience in ICT security, including in more than one organisation and potentially global experience.  You will require knowledge and practice in delivering ICT cyber security strategy, the conduct of ICT cyber security operations, and providing cyber security technical direction in a large, complex and diverse organisation. You will also be a strategic thinker with significant leadership and management ability and possess strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability as a persuasive leader to communicate highly technical information to non-technical senior Defence executives.

As a Branch Head (Senior Executive Service Band 1) you will join the Senior Leadership Group that plays a key role in promoting and influencing a shared civilian/military commitment to the strategic direction of Defence. In this role you will:

  • Lead and manage a Branch practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration
  • Demonstrate strong judgement and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems
  • Effectively challenge the status quo when required
  • Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of results
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal

To be eligible for the role, you must be:

  • An Australian citizen or intending to become one, and
  • Assessed as suitable to hold and maintain a Top Secret Positive Vetting security clearance.
