About us

Intelligence, Surveillance and Space Division (ISSD) undertakes internationally-recognised research and development into technologies aimed at enhancing national capability for Defence and national agency decision makers.  ISSD is also leading DST’s Space Strategic Research, through close collaboration and partnerships with a range of Defence, Industry and Academic stakeholders.

The Group Leader Biometrics will lead the Biometrics science and technology capability within the Intelligence Analytics Branch.  The Intelligence Analytics Branch conducts applied research in data and human sciences to automatically extract, fuse and disseminate meaningful content from intelligence data to improve the situation awareness of analysts within the Australian Intelligence Community.

The Biometrics group develops novel technologies to support identification and identity protection in challenging environments, and evaluates biometric and socio-technical system performance to future-proof Australian government identity solutions. The group also plays a key role in transitioning new capabilities, providing advice on integration of biometric and identity systems across government.

About the role

The Group Leader’s primary role is to lead and inspire a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to achieve the strategic goals of the group in delivering high impact biometrics research for Defence. You will lead and shape research for Defence and National Security clients in advanced biometrics to uniquely identify individuals.  You will consider current and future increasingly challenging targets in complex and contested environments. 

You will manage work on Science & Technology (S&T) program activities or other collaborative arrangements where multiple technologies, project complexity or international considerations require broad and experienced oversight and representation. Based on your experience you will provide advice on the best scientific method to achieve Defence outcomes and report those outcomes to the client representatives, the wider scientific community and to your Research Leader.

As a leadership team member you will: contribute to strategy development; execute and oversee program development; manage resource allocation; and manage internal and external collaboration priorities and opportunities.

You will have a national or international reputation, specialised knowledge and considerable experience in the field of biometrics which will enable you to forecast future Defence needs and understand the opportunities S&T can provide in meeting these needs. Your client focus will enable you to understand their priorities and balance the client delivery program with long term, underpinning research and development. As a collaborator, you will foster collaborative arrangements with industry, universities and international organisations and create opportunities for your team to work cooperatively with other teams on interconnecting projects.
