The Communication Science Specialist will under limited guidance, develop and apply advanced communications science principles and techniques in support of the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap (JDFPG) Site Systems Engineering (SSE) laboratory. This will involve working with state-of-the-art technology to develop practical solutions to uniquely challenging problems. The incumbent will be part of a small team that represents DST Group at the JDFPG, and will collaborate with other SSE technologists (both Australian and US personnel) as well as with Edinburgh-based CSS MSTC staff. The position will involve, primarily, communications science related computer software based work. It will require awareness and contributions into associated laboratory and field-based WHS issues.
The successful candidate will be based in Edinburgh and include an arrangement involving 3-4 short term working level visits, per year, to the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap , Northern Territory. The Communication Science Specialist will work in a collaborative environment and be expected to undertake research and development requiring originality and innovation which will include the design and development of communications signal conditioning and processing techniques.
They will be expected to define complex S&T problems and apply scientific and engineering principles and concepts to solve these problems; progress technology development through to field-able prototypes through experimental testing within laboratory and field environments; work independently and in a small team, with a high level of initiative and motivation; explain complex information and concepts to both military and civilian clients; contribute strongly to and participate in a multi-disciplinary team in the research and development of practical concepts, tools and techniques; adapt to changes to research projects or programs brought about by varying priorities and resources.
The successful candidate will be supported with training and methods of analysis as required. The importance of continuous learning to enhance scientific or engineering expertise is also recognised and strongly supported.
