The Aerospace Division’s Infra-Red Signatures Group develops and delivers high-fidelity infra-red (IR) signature models of aircraft and missiles to Defence. We are seeking to expand the real-time utilisation of signatures in virtual and operational environments through the development of Machine Learning techniques. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with computer science, applied mathematics or physics skills to assist in developing modelling and simulation capabilities to meet the challenges facing Defence today and in the future. Training and development opportunities will be frequently available to hone your computing and analysis skills as they apply to this role. You will have opportunities to travel interstate to engage stakeholders and teammates and to participate in trials to gather real-world data from aerospace systems. Your contribution will materially impact the survivability, decision superiority and tactics of Australia’s Defence Force in the air, at sea and on the land, in the face of IR-guided threats.

Come join a team which works collaboratively with scientists from different disciplines to understand, shape, improve and grow the modelling and simulation capabilities across the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST). You will be able to apply and develop your skills in C++, C and Python programming and scientific computing and support quality software development and management by utilising existing tools and techniques as well as new and novel approaches. This position will give you the opportunity to exploit state of the art DST private cloud and High Performance Computing infrastructure, apply GPU computing, work with Data Scientists and implement machine learning algorithms.

As the ideal candidate you have the passion and ability to solve problems by applying your computing skills to innovate and implement software to integrate and utilise IR signature datasets in real and virtual environments. Your understanding of Machine Learning will provide insight within a team to optimise the smart usage and real-time manipulation of signatures. Your desire to innovate will drive you to investigate new methods and solutions. Your excellent verbal and written communication skills will enable you to collaborate with Defence personnel, academia and industry with clarity and influence.

DST is an inclusive employer, committed to diversity and equity in the workplace. At DST you will enjoy a range of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements including options to purchase additional annual leave, a paid stand down period between Christmas and New Year. For the future conscious a superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be made on your behalf by Defence, higher than most industries, with the option to make additional contributions.
