Chief Defence Scientist 


The Department of Defence is seeking an outstanding senior executive to fill the Senior Executive Service Band 3 position of Chief Defence Scientist, based in Canberra.

Reporting to the Secretary and the Chief of the Defence Force, the Chief Defence Scientist will lead the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group and provide high level policy and scientific advice. DST is an integral part of Defence and is Australia’s second largest research and development organisation, employing over 2000 personnel.  It has an enviable record in providing science and technology support to the Australian Defence Force and in developing new technologies. As Chief Defence Scientist, you will manage a significant budget and lead some ofAustralia’s brightest and most innovative scientists, engineers and IT specialists.

DST works closely with equivalent organisations of several other countries, as well as defence-related industry within Australia. The successful applicant will be expected to further develop these relationships in the interests of the Australian Defence Organisation.

To satisfy the demands of this challenging leadership role, candidates will need to be proven at a comparable level in the Science and Technology field within a large, complex and changing organisation, either in the commercial or Government sectors. Excellent strategic policy development and analytical capabilities along with exceptional communication, influencing and relationship management skills are core to success in this role.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. This position is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo security assessments to the appropriate level.
