The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

The two roles will oversee the acoustic signature and non-acoustic signature technical programs respectively.  They will provide technical management in developing and maintaining capability within Australia to characterise and minimise submarine signatures of current and future platforms, initiating and managing collaborative partnerships, and liaisons with national and international stakeholders.  Australia is leveraging the technology, capability and design expertise from the UK and US and these roles will be involved in developing and defining the ASA’s signature management capability for conventionally-armed, nuclear powered submarines.

The duties of a Technical Lead, Signatures in ASA will include, but not limited to:

• Oversee the development of technical capability within Australia to minimise/optimise the acoustic or non-acoustic signature of current and future submarines.
• Provide guidance in developing measurement capability within Australia to characterise submarine acoustic or non-acoustic signatures.
• Maximises submarine performance and lethality through minimizing submarine signature that mitigates detectability. 
• Understand the design and operating intent of the acquired submarine design to examine and act upon anticipated credible risks of the submarine design operating in Australian operating conditions. 
• Liaise with US and UK counterparts to develop Australia’s signature management capability in preparation to the submarine rotational force and the acquisition of SSNs.
• Plan and manage a range of human and physical resources required to carry out complex signature related programs.
• Initiate, develop and maintain collaborative programs with Defence, Australian universities, industry, and international partners.
• Your role may range from being very specialist in nature to quite broad. You may also have the opportunity to work across streams. 

To excel in these roles, you may be required to:

• Research and synthesise complex information 
• Develop, investigate, test and interpret technical requirements 
• Provide technical advice, knowledge and recommendations 
• Engage with Defence, AUKUS and industry partners to understand and develop requirements
• Prepare briefs, minutes, proposals and presentations 
• Coordinate, share and effectively engage with highly skilled teams across the enterprise.

The Technology Division is responsible for providing design control, independent technical advice, assurance and authority that will support the development and future operation of the nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

As a member of the Technical Program, you will continue to grow your subject matter expertise, be accountable for exercising any assigned Technical Program delegations and providing objective quality science and technology evidence.

With an increased forward presence of Royal Navy and US Navy Nuclear-Powered Submarines to Australia, this may mean working closely on site, and/or travel or relocation overseas.

Our Ideal Candidate
A Signature Technical Lead will have extensive knowledge and experience relating to acoustic and/or non-acoustic prediction and control, especially as applied to maritime platforms.  They will provide a strategic level of specialist, professional and technical expertise relating to their function areas. They will initiate, establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally, and have the ability to recognise shared agendas and work toward mutually beneficial outcomes.
 
We are seeking talented people who can work collaboratively and have a passion for applying their technical skills and knowledge to manage and support the development and implementation of acoustic and/or non-acoustic signature management of nuclear powered submarines.

Our ideal candidates will bring the following attributes and skills to the role; 

• Bachelor Degree related to acoustics, electro-magnetic or equivalent.  Post graduate qualifications in a related area will be highly regarded.
• Proven ability to predict, measure, monitor, and/or optimise the signature of maritime platforms. 
• Demonstrated experience in international engagements to develop capability and provide solutions, especially within the Defence area and Government-to-Government agreements.
• Demonstrated experience in initiating, developing and managing collaboration with academia and industry partners.
• Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex technical content and impact with Defence and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience in the management of resources, including staff, budgets, and infrastructure, in the delivery of complex S&T projects. 
• Proven ability in supervision and mentorship of staff, including career guidance.
