Children's Cancer Institute is an internationally recognised and leading Independent Medical Research Institute based in Sydney, Australia, solely dedicated to improving health outcomes for children with cancer through world class research discovery and translation.

Your Team Leader Role:

Children's Cancer Institute comprises 260 staff and students who benefit from state-of-the-art research platforms. We are the largest research-based facility dedicated to childhood cancer in Australia and the region. Team Leader roles are being introduced as a key step in our transition to a new structure based around research themes to facilitate the translation of research into clinical application and better health outcomes. The research themes are:

  • Blood Cancers
  • Gene Regulation in Cancer
  • Experimental Therapeutics
  • Blood Cancers
  • Cancer Nanomedicine
  • Personalised Medicine


We are seeking to appoint emerging scientists or clinician-scientists as Team Leaders who will be responsible for establishing a research group and developing a research program of excellence. The successful applicant will integrate into one of the Institute’s themes, however their research can include other areas that will advance translational and discovery research in childhood cancer. The Team Leader will be expected to work collaboratively both within and outside the institute.

You will be expected to:

  • Initiate and build an independent research group in an aspect of childhood cancer relevant to the goals of Children’s Cancer Institute
  • Attract external competitive grant funding to independently support your research
  • Identify novel and competitive research topics and undertake original and innovative analysis 
  • Actively publish research work in high quality journals, contribute to publications and disseminate research findings at national and international conferences
  • Mentor and guide the work and research of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers


Successful applicants will be provided with a research budget to support their research activities. They will also be expected to enhance this internal resource with national/international external funding. Initial appointment will be for a 5 year term. 

Applicants will have a PhD or equivalent degree and an exemplary track record of research in their chosen area, as well as demonstrated potential to lead an independent group in novel research that will contribute to the overall goals of the Institute.
