An exciting opportunity exists for an exceptional candidate to join Garvan's Single Cell and Computational Genomics Laboratory and develop their own independent research program as part of a large-scale initiative in cellular genomics. The position is part of a collaborative endeavour between the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Weizmann Institute of Science - an international association that harnesses the synergistic strengths of two world-class research institutes.
The Computational Genomics Laboratory, headed by Associate Professor Joseph Powell, focuses on demonstrating the genomic mechanisms by which loci contribute to complex human diseases, and working towards early stage diagnosis methods and targeted therapeutics. The laboratory applies existing and novel computational approaches for analysis of high-throughput genomic data, followed by functional validation using molecular techniques such as high-throughput genome editing and cell phenotyping. The laboratory has a very significant focus on the use of single cell sequence technology and development of new methods in this field. The laboratory drives projects in a number of areas of medical genomics research, but we also believe strongly in the value of collaboration between groups with differing expertise. We are committed to reproducible research practices, and open data policies.
The Senior Research Officer / Group Leader will be accountable for research within a discipline area, but they will integrate and align with the research goals of the Laboratory and/or Institute to address important questions in their area of research through individual effort and through the development of collaborations both within and outside the institute.
The successful candidate will also interact significantly with the Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics (GWCCG). GWCCG houses a cellular genomics facility with cutting edge services for researchers and industry partners. The GWCCG team develop new technologies to solve critical problems; and run research programs that focus on both fundamental and translational cellular genomics. The Garvan-Weizmann Centre is one of the few global sites where state-of-the-art technologies are seamlessly integrated, including the latest platforms in flow cytometry, microfluidics, genomics, high-performance computing, and bioinformatics.
The Opportunity
The position includes an attractive salary, research support, and annual funding to visit the Weizmann Institute. Depending on the experience of the candidate, the position can be either a Senior Research Officer or Group Leader. The role will be offered full-time for 3 years in the first instance.
The key responsibilities include the following:
About You
The incumbent will have a PhD in an appropriate area of medical research, and relevant post-doctoral experience (at least 5 years of relevant research experience) and publications in the field of computational biology. A background in cellular genomics is desirable, but not essential. The candidate is expected to have a well-evidenced strong track record in performing high impact scientific research in the field of computational genomics.
You will also have the following key competencies:
