Scientific Officer - Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics

Established by the Garvan Institute in 2012, the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG) advances the use of genomic information in patient care. KCCG acts as a mechanism to translate genomic research information into patient care. To do this KCCG employs experts in genomics including researchers, bioinformaticians, clinicians, educators and software engineers. We use world-leading OMICS based technology to enhance diagnosis and treatment for patients.

KCCG is integrated with numerous state and nationwide flagship genomic research projects, and partners with many national and international collaborative organisations and funding bodies.

The Opportunity

The role of Scientific Officer is crucial to the success of KCCG. The role will manage our collaborative commitments, coordinate the day-to-day as well as longer-term activities of KCCG including effective communication and collaboration between our partners, and dealing with executive administrative issues. The Scientific Officer will assist to identify and secure new funding opportunities for KCCG.

With dual reporting to the Scientific and Clinical Heads of KCCG, the key responsibilities are:

  • Supervise and project manage complex multi-centre genomics based research programs ensuring timely delivery of milestones.
  • Undertake a range of reporting duties including (but not limited to) the Garvan Board, Garvan Facility and Equipment Committee, various funding bodies and collaborative research partners.
  • Contribute to generating competitive grant applications for a diverse range of funding bodies including philanthropic, NHMRC and other state and national research funding agencies.
  • Coordinate central ethics, research governance documents and other regulatory documentation as required.
  • Undertake high-level operations management including budget planning and reporting in consultation with KCCG Heads.

About You

The successful candidate will be an excellent negotiator who can work very well in a collaborative environment of innovation and empowerment. You will also possess the following key skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or preferably a higher degree in a relevant area of medical or biological science. Additional qualifications in Project Management will be looked upon favourably.
  • Broad knowledge of genomics, technology and the Australian healthcare system (including funding bodies) is desirable
  • Demonstrated experience of project management including planning, organising resources, implementation, progressing work activities to strict deadlines and reporting, with evidence of leading or coordinating a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage strategic and working relationships with key stakeholders with the ability to exercise discretion in managing highly sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Excellent literacy skills and ability to prepare scientific reports, papers and other documentation (e.g. ethics applications).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to coordinate and actively participate in group discussions and meetings with senior members of KCCG.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a wider KCCG team, maintain a network of contacts and liaise with staff at all levels from different groups.
