Te Waiora, Joint Institute for Freshwater Management

The University and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) are establishing a joint institute, named Te Waiora, Freshwater Management Institute. Te Waiora will build on the University's teaching and research mandate in freshwater science and related disciplines and NIWA's role as the lead Crown Research Institute in freshwater science. The Institute will provide a substantial lift in the quality of freshwater decision-making and outcomes and help inform strategies aimed at solving complex challenges in managing freshwater related issues. It will have a strong iwi focus through its association with other institutions.

As Director of Te Waiora you will play a major part in the establishment and operation of the Institute including: setting the strategic direction and providing strong leadership to staff including building a successful research culture to achieve academic research funding expectations and activities. Other key responsibilities include building and maintaining successful partnerships with funders, end-users and stakeholders and promoting the development of relevant graduate and postgraduate programmes around the University.

A PhD qualification in a relevant field is essential. To be successful in this position you will be able to obtain and deliver on external contract funding from commercial government funding agencies and demonstrate a track record of mission-led research leadership involving mentoring and leading research teams of staff and leading projects. You will be recognised by leaders in business, industry and government agencies for your contribution to the academic field at a national and international level through your excellent research and scholarship record of high quality publications, other research contributions and presentations.

A competitive salary is on offer, dependent on the qualifications, skills and experience of the successful applicant.
