The Opportunity

In partnership with some of Australia’s leading government agencies, Monash University is inviting applications for 18 behaviour change PhD scholarships being offered through the Monash Graduate Research Industry Program (GRIP).

The GRIP responds to demand for interdisciplinary researchers who are capable of straddling the worlds of academia and government. Successful applicants will work with government partners to co-design and deliver new interdisciplinary behaviour change approaches to help solve public policy issues in areas such as safety, environment, health and education.

This is an exciting career opportunity. In fact, as more organisations recognise that their programs are more likely to succeed if they are underpinned by an understanding of human behaviour - and how to influence it - demand for behavioural experts is growing worldwide.

Successful candidates will be able to select projects that reflect their research interests and they will be supported by some of Monash University’s leading academics. Importantly, as a new cohort, they will also learn from each other during their GRIP experience.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

A well-articulated and considered professional development program has been designed for successful candidates including core PhD skills and behaviour change training, personal and professional development, peer to peer learning and industry placement (see below).

INDUSTRY PLACEMENT

Understanding partner organisations is important to designing research projects that are sensitive to their needs. Therefore candidates are expected to spend time with their host organisation throughout their candidature, including an intense initial period early in 2018.

REMUNERATION

An annual living allowance based on the Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend of $26,682 per annum (2017 rate - indexed annually) for 3 years.

ELIGIBILITY and ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet Monash Scholarship eligibility for entry into the Behaviour Change GRIP. Scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s academic record, research output and prior research experience. Details of the relevant requirements are available here.

Applicants must also show excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and willingness to travel and work from multiple locations including Clayton (Victoria), the Melbourne CBD and other locations.

Priority will be given to applicants who:

• hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University
  
  
• have not previously held an Australian Government or Monash-funded Postgraduate Research Award for more than six months.

If your qualifications do not meet the H1 level, your experience as a researcher could be considered equivalent. Check our eligibility equivalencies for more details.

All applicants must be able to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research, have adequate training and the ability to pursue the proposed course of study.
