About the role:

An exciting opportunity is available to join a vibrant team of researchers as a Research Assistant within the Neuroregeneration theme. Reporting to Michele Binder, the successful candidate will support research groups investigating the process of tissue recovery related to multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases.

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • The maintenance of iPSC cell lines over the weekend. The successful applicant will be expected to work at least one day of the weekend (exact day and times to be negotiated).
  • Conduct research under limited supervision and provide laboratory-based support for experiments and related work.
  • Contribute to writing of manuscripts and dissemination of research results.
  • Ensure required laboratory consumables are ordered in a timely fashion and common laboratory reagents required for the conduct of planned experiments are maintained.
  • Supervise and assist with research training of postgraduate students.
  • Maintain clear and accurate laboratory notebook and other forms of records of experimental results as appropriate.

This position is a permanent, full-time role and is open to be negotiated to be part-time. The role attracts an annual salary offer ranging from Research Assistant 3 (RA3) $76,171 to Research Assistant 8 (RA8) $92,776 commensurate with experience.

About you:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Strong organisation skills including the ability to work consistently and effectively
  • Excellent record keeping and data management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to function well in a team environment
  • Proven ability to conduct high quality research
  • Experience in small animal handling, including administration of substances via injection and collection of tissue following perfusion
  • Cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Flow cytometric analysis of cells, with a strong understanding of experimental design

Experience with the below is desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience with iPSC culture and differentiation
  • Purification of human cells from blood samples or frozen stocks
  • Experience with brain organoids
  • Ability to perform small animal surgery
