About the role

At the Climate Change Cluster (C3), our vision is to deliver transformational research that addresses global issues of major environmental, social and economic importance such as nutrition, food and energy security, sustainability, ecological resilience and health.

Reporting into Professor Peter Ralph, you will provide expertise in the photosynthetic assessment of plants (micro/macro algae) and characterizing the bio-optical/bio-physical properties for a range of existing and future research projects, ranging from microbial genomics and transcriptomics, to microalgal diversity, phylogenetics and evolution, plant and biotic and abiotic stress responses in corals.

You will also contribute to the development and research performance of C3 by providing input and guidance on the bio-optics, photobiology and phenotypic screening of algae, as well as using skills in interfacing electronic/optical instruments, to ensure the satisfactory progress of the research projects in C3.

The institute has quadrupled in size since 2008 and has expanded its research capability from ecology to include additional expertise in plant physiology, microbiology, cellular biology, microfluidics, biochemistry, molecular biology (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), physics (bio-optics), , ecological modelling, chemistry, bio-informatics and remote sensing.

About you:

To be successful in securing this role you will have:

  • A PhD in bio-optics or photobiology of plants.
  • Extensive expertise in the characterizing of the bio-optical properties of micro and macroalgae and aquatic plants with a detailed knowledge of light harvesting and photoprotective processes, and molecular biology, processes relating to photosynthesis.    
  • Knowledge of current debates and issues in the field of photobiology in the context of optimising photosynthesis, wavelength dependent photosynthesis.
  • Knowledge of algal phenomics or algal phenotypic screening.
  • Demonstrated experience working with spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging and fluorometry (PAM, fRRF).
  • Demonstrated experience working with algal phenomics.
  • Demonstrated experience in publication of research findings in international journals
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and independently under broad direction within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $78,170 to $95,206 pa (Level A)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed termbasis for two years.
