About the Research Office

The Research Office is a central unit within the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and provides support for research activities across UTS in partnership with the faculty research offices and other support units, including identifying and accessing research funding, contracts, ethics, post-award, IP management and commercialisation and research data intelligence. In order to continually improve the way we support our researchers, the Research Office is adopting a new operational team structure.

In support of our endeavour to undertake excellent research that delivers global impact, UTS is establishing a best practice research culture that will support UTS researchers and professional staff to achieve their full potential. Ethical conduct of research is an essential part of any excellent research culture and has the ability to add significant value to the design and management of research projects.

About the role

As the Senior Research Ethics Officer (SREO) you will be responsible for supporting the operations of the UTS Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), the Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and sub-committees. You will also ensure that UTS research activities are undertaken in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research; National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research; Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes; applicable State and Commonwealth requirements; and all applicable legislation. You will play a key role in the continuous improvement of processes and systems to streamline the UTS research ethics process and to raise the profile of ethics to a value-add activity for excellent research.

Day to day you will:

  • promote an awareness of ethical issues relating to the conduct of research by providing information and support to research staff and students
  • provide expert advice to research staff and students (including ADRs, Centre Directors etc.)
  • develop training materials and deliver these via clinics, workshops, seminars etc.
  • undertake review of applications, ratifications, transfers and amendments
  • prepare technical minutes in consultation with the Research Ethics Manager
  • support the development and implementation of processes and systems to streamline the UTS research ethics process.
  • contribute to office-wide projects, such as continuous improvement, by raising ideas and in some cases documenting / designing / revising processes relevant to the role.
  • prepare annual reports to regulators/Institutions

To be successful in securing the role you will have:

  • a high degree of scientific literacy to liaise with scientific researchers and staff
  • a working knowledge of the current Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and its implications for research practice in the university environment.
  • a thorough knowledge of the current legislation, standards and codes of practice relating to human research ethics, animal welfare and biosafety, and their implications for the conduct of research in a university environment.
  • a thorough understanding of the human, animal ethics and biosafety review processes in the higher education setting.
  • prior experience working in university sector in research management
  • prior experience acting in the Secretariat of an institutional human, animal ethics or biosafety committee would be an advantage.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $90,439pa to $97,668 pa (HEW 7)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
