About the area

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is charged with leading transformational change to enhance the research culture, grow the scale and maximise the impact of UTS research. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) has responsibility for the University's research strategy and policies, the central research budget, research and contract research activities, higher degree by research education, industry engagement in research, intellectual property and commercialisation. The Research Division includes the following units:

  • Office of the DVC Research (ODVCR)
  • Research and Innovation Office (RIO)
  • Graduate Research School (GRS)
  • Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF)
  • Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG)

In addition there is extensive interaction with each of the Faculties regarding their research activities, funding and outputs.

 About the role

The Manager, DVCR Strategic Programs has diverse responsibilities ranging from high level strategic support, with exposure to stakeholders at all levels of UTS and externally, to operational oversight of the Office of the DVC Research. Operating with a high degree of initiative and autonomy, this role facilitates implementation of multiple concurrent activities under the UTS research strategy; delivering recommendations, proposals and action within a dynamic, changing landscape.

Located in the Chancellery, this exciting role will see you working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders on a diverse range of activities.  This opportunity will give you exposure to UTS’s strategy at the highest levels and allow you to utilise your extensive experience in program delivery, research management and stakeholder engagement.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Providing proactive advice on a range of current and emerging issues relating to the portfolio and the higher education sector
  • Providing executive support and coordination for Research Division business planning and budgeting, including initiating and driving strategic projects
  • Coordinating annual research performance review and target setting processes for Faculties and major research centres
  • Preparing high quality documentation including high-level briefings, speech notes, position papers, presentations, and reports for the Senior Executive, Council, Academic Board and other internal committees
  • Coordinating and drafting responses to research-related Government consultations
  • Ensuring the Office of the DVCR has effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Providing advice on governance and, where required, supporting committees chaired by the DVC Research

Skills and experience required

  • Sound strategic planning skills, a capacity for systematic thinking and the ability to analyse information and situations, identify issues, assess impacts and propose options/ recommendations based on sound rationale
  • A strong record of achievement in a relevant professional role, including demonstrated delivery of diverse programs and projects
  • A high level of initiative and energy, flexibility, personal integrity and accountability, the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines and on multiple tasks
  • Strong relationship management ability including excellent influencing and networking skills
  • A sound knowledge of the research environment within the higher education sector

 Remuneration and benefits

Base salary range: A competitive salary will be negotiated depending on experience.

This role attracts 17% superannuation in addition to the base salary. Employee benefits include flexible work practices, child care centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.

This appointment will be on an 18 month fixed term, full-time basis.
