About your environment
Cancer Council Victoria has been leading efforts against cancer since 1936 through world leading research, prevention, support and advocacy programs. The Cancer Epidemiology & Intelligence Division (CEID) conducts a broad range of research aimed at expanding our understanding of the factors that contribute to or protect against the development of cancer, or survival following a cancer diagnosis. It comprises a multidisciplinary team of epidemiologists, statisticians, dieticians and support staff, committed to understanding how to improve our health.
Research project overview
Cancer Council Victoria (CCV) and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have established on ongoing collaboration that includes an established annual record linkage of data from Victorian Cancer Registry (VCR), on all incident cancers diagnosed in the state, to hospital inpatient and emergency department data and population-based radiotherapy data, as well as vital status information from the Victorian and national death registries. As part of an NHMRC-funded Partnership Grant we plan to utilise and extend these linked population-based health-related datasets to quantify, using mediation analysis, the extent to which health care pathways, and patient- and service-related factors contribute to observed inequalities in cancer survival in Victoria. This project has the potential to achieve long-term and sustainable improvements in cancer survival for Victorians, in the first instance, and for all Australians in the medium term.
