About the Role
The School of Biomedical Sciences & Pharmacy is part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine and formally combines the five disciplines of medical biochemistry & genetics, human physiology, immunology & microbiology, anatomy, and pharmacy & experimental pharmacology.

The School is one of the University's most research-intensive schools, currently being ranked in the top three in terms of external research funding. Our researchers apply cutting edge technology and relevant disease models to address important questions and accelerate knowledge transfer and translation in key areas of human health and disease.

Professor Phil Hansbro is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to be a key member of The Priority Research Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Disease, based at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Working with world class researchers and supporting research higher degree students, you will be expected to develop cross-discipline collaborations. The focus of your work is on understanding the microbiome and how it may protect or promote the development and progression of COPD, with opportunities to work on additional projects investigating COPD and asthma. The position involves the use of cellular and molecular techniques (in the field of respiratory disease) and supervises both undergraduate and post-graduate students.

Skills and experience
To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • a PhD degree with experience in microbiology/bacteriology and/or immunology, as it pertains to the pathogenesis of respiratory disease;
  • potential to win Fellowships and grants in short and/or longer time frames with mentorship;
  • expertise in the study of microbiomes of other processes in immunity, inflammation and/or respiratory disease;
  • demonstrated experience in culturing of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and an understanding of culturing conditions for different bacteria;
  • demonstrated experience in functional genomics; and
  • demonstrated experience in relevant laboratory techniques including DNA and RNA extractions, real-time PCR, flow cytometry and ELISA.

This position is based in Newcastle.

Academic Level A - $64,804 to $87,943 per annum; or Level B - $92,574 to $109,933 per annum, plus an employer superannuation contribution of 9.5%.
