The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is a division within the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, and is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement. NMI has headquarters in Lindfield NSW with the main laboratories in West Lindfield (NSW), North Ryde (NSW) and Port Melbourne (Victoria). In addition there are smaller laboratories and offices located in every state capital and some regional cities throughout Australia, and a significant cohort of field-based staff undertaking trade measurement activities.

The safety and quality team maintains and improves NMI safety and quality systems. It has team members located across the country working closely with NMI laboratories and officers to ensure the safety of NMI operations and the quality of NMI services. A zero harm objective is the highest priority for the division.

This is an ongoing position responsible for providing strategic, managerial and operational advice and support to the NMI Executive in relation to the maintenance and improvement of NMI safety and quality systems. It is based in Lindfield NSW, reports directly to the CEO and manages a team of five safety and quality experts.

Key functions of the role include:

  • providing strategic, evidence-based advice to the NMI Executive and managers in order to improve NMI safety and quality outcomes; advice reflects international and national best practice, and includes analysis of safety and quality incident trends (individually and over time, for NMI and for comparable organizations);
  • leading the maintenance and continuous improvement of NMI’s safety and quality systems
  • supporting managers with practical assistance in implementing safety and quality improvements, complying with legislative safety requirements, and meeting stakeholder and client quality expectations
  • managing the Safety and Quality Section and the delivery of its work programme and
  • assisting Safety and Quality Section members in their local implementation of NMI-wide best practice approaches.
