Group Leader Passive Sonar
EL 2 (S&T Level 7)

The Group Leader Passive Sonar (GL- PS) reports to the Research Leader Sonar Technology and Systems (RL STS); and under broad guidance is responsible for effective leadership of a team of scientists, engineers and technicians who define the Passive Sonar Science & Technology Capability (STC). They have a national or international reputation in sonar technology and systems knowledge, skills, expertise and their application to Defence.
The GL-PS will have a demonstrated ability to forecast future Defence needs, initiate research and generate new knowledge to produce enhanced capability. They will select the best scientific method to achieve Defence outcomes; review the S&T quality of reports and publications. They are accountable for the development and sustainment of the quality of the Passive Sonar STC S&T, as agreed to with the Research Leader.
The GL-PS will lead a complex area of S&T relevant to sonar technology and systems, and provide the leadership, vision, guidance, direction and collaboration to ensure that the STC capability is harnessed to deliver agreed outputs to Defence. The GL is also responsible for the development of the team, including senior staff, and will cultivate a motivating and collaborative culture. The GL – PS will have a sound understanding of Defence client S&T priorities and demonstrated ability to translate these into a well-planned program of relevant S&T activities. They will ensure resources are applied to agreed priorities, and demonstrate flexibly to adjust the work plan as required, and to achieve task milestones, reporting work outcomes to client representatives on a regular basis.
In collaboration with the RL STS, the GL-PS will facilitate the creation of cross-STC/MSTC / Divisional teams; will develop and maintain appropriate external links with industry, universities and overseas organisations.”
