About the B-lymphocytes in autoimmunity and malignancies group:

The research group has a number of new frontiers projects looking at unappreciated mechanisms driving inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer. We are looking at the role of diet and microbiome in preventing the progression of leukemia and found that modifying the metabolism of leukemic cells is a promising strategy to cure leukemia. We are also looking at the role of an orphan chemokine receptor in immunity and cancer. The research group is also developing innovative therapies for an autoimmune disease called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). 

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

This position arises from the appointment of Dr Fabienne Mackay as Director and CEO of QIMR Berghofer. The role will be responsible for a research project and for a small number of research staff and students.

You will be responsible for:

  • Infrastructure support activities; such as setting up a new laboratory and overseeing the transfer and storage of material from a previous laboratory.
  • Manage the laboratory; such as colony management, administer ethics, ordering consumables, etc. And
  • Conduct your own research, which will include writing research publications, assisting with grant applications and preparing presentations.

About you:

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Immunology and at least 3-5 years’ experience in a relevant research laboratory. Effective project management skills, strong organisational skills and advanced interpersonal and collaborative skills are essential. You will need to be able to work independently with high levels of self-motivation and initiative.

In addition to solid Immunology expertise, you will have a good understanding of ethical and biological issues applicable to medical research. You will have extensive experience in but not limited to cell culture, histology and imaging and animal work, data interrogation and experimental design.

Remuneration: Salary range is $82,506 to 88,522 per annum. This is a full-time appointment for 3 years.
