The QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, located in Brisbane, Australia, has an international reputation for excellence in medical research and translation. Our research is conducted across four program areas covering Infectious Diseases, Chronic Disorders, Mental Health and Cancer, and through four departments: Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics and Computational Biology, Immunology, and Population Health.

 

What are we looking for?

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified professionals for a newly created joint research-driven position of ‘Medical Oncologist’. The successful applicant will be a dynamic and internationally recognised clinician-scientist who shares our vision of better health through outstanding discovery and translational research. 

This exciting opportunity will take the form of a joint appointment between QIMR Berghofer and the Department of Medical Oncology, Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH). The successful applicant will spend the majority of their time leading a multidisciplinary research group focusing on one or more solid tumours with a strong emphasis on translation.   Day to day, this will involve the supervision of staff and/or students, lodgement of grant applications for external research funding (e.g. through the National Health & Medical Research Council), writing and submission of publications in peer reviewed journals, presentations at national and/or international conferences, and significant levels of professional engagement in order to advance both internal and external collaborations with key stakeholders (including other scientists and trialists).

The remaining time will be undertaking clinical duties within a Metro North Hospital and Health Service facility (e.g. RBWH). The successful candidate will work with the Director of Clinical Oncology, Director of Medical Oncology and colleagues in the Medical Oncology Group to facilitate and further build research capacity with the Division.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead an internationally recognised research group in the Cancer research program encompassing some or all of the following:

    • Investigator driven research within relevant pre-clinical sciences and/or translational medicine

    • Australasian and international specialist trials groups 
    • Pharma trials

    • Translational research

    • Developing new therapies

    • Mentoring/ training/ supervision of staff and/or students

  • Build and maintain an international reputation as a leading researcher in the area of medical oncology, as evidenced by invitations to speak at national/ international meetings and conferences

  • Work collaboratively with the key stakeholders to develop intra and inter-institutional collaboration opportunities which are relevant to the research outcomes at QIMR Berghofer and MNHHS

  • Seek and maintain research and salary funding through applications for competitive grants fellowships, industry sponsored research and/ or philanthropic activities;

 

Qualifications/ Experience:

The successful candidate will be a specialist medical oncologist who is registered (or eligible to be registered) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.  

Additionally, he/ she will hold a research higher degree with equivalent research record and a national and international research profile in a relevant stream of medical oncology.

Remuneration:

An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will be commensurate with experience.

NB: The successful candidate is expected to undertake clinical duties up to 12 hrs per week (via a formal clinical appointment in Cancer Care Services, RBWH, role to be negotiated with CCS Director).
